Save Maria's Market Cafe from closure
The Issue
For more than sixty years, Maria's Market Cafe has provided stable local employment, trained and supported generations of staff, welcomed visitors from around the world and served thousands of market traders, workers, resident and tourists alike. It has always been more than a cafe, it has been a meeting place where friendships have been formed, families have gathered and the unique community spirit of Borough Market has been lived every day. Maria's has continually supported Borough Markets charitable and community objectives by providing an affordable and welcoming space that is open to everyone regardless of background. Losing Maria's would not simply mean the loss of another business it would mean losing a prt of hte social fabric, heritage and identity that makes Borough Market so special.
Unfortunately, despite our deep roots and continuous dedication to the market community, we have been informed that our lease will not be renewed. This decision came without any explanation or prior warning, leaving us and our loyal patrons devastated. This sudden decision threatens not only a family-owned business but also a piece of London's vibrant history.
Maria's Market Cafe represents the heart and soul of Borough Market. It showcases an enduring legacy, being one of the few remaining original stalls that have witnessed the market's evolution over the years. Its closure would not only mean the loss of a local business but also a blow to the market's character and its community spirit.
We urge the Borough Market management to reconsider their decision. Decisions like these should be made with transparency and involve all stakeholders, especially those who have contributed significantly to the vibrancy and success of the market over the years. We propose to engage in a constructive dialogue to explore possible solutions—whether it be lease renegotiation or relocation within the market—to ensure that Maria's Market Cafe can continue to thrive.
Your support can make a difference. By signing this petition, you are not just supporting a family business you are standing up for the independent traders, local jobs. heritage and community spirit that have made Borough Market one of London's most loved destinations for generations. We are simply asking Borough market to pause, engage in meaningful dialogue and give Maria's a fair opportunity to continue serving the community it has proudly been part of since 1961. Please sign and share this petition and help us protect an important piece of London's history before it is lost forvever!
