The Issue
On February 19th, 2026, the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) Attendance Boundary Committee made a decision that threatens the very existence of a cornerstone of our community, Mandarin Lakes K-8. By voting to dissolve its boundary, and consequently the school, they have set forth plans for Air Base K-8 Center, a public magnet school, to occupy the building starting in the 2026-2027 school year.
This decision is not just about reshuffling students or repurposing a building; it threatens to dismantle the community that Mandarin Lakes K-8 (MLK8) has built and nurtured over the years. Located in Naranja, Florida, MLK8 is more than just an educational institution; it is a vibrant hub where children, parents, teachers, and staff have come together to create a supportive and nurturing environment. Over the years, our school has provided quality education and critical support to our students, many of whom come from underprivileged backgrounds. 20% of our students are currently experiencing homelessness. 45% of our students are currently receiving special services.
The dissolution of MLK8 not only displaces our students, but also disrupts their education and uproots them from a familiar and supportive environment. For many families, sending their children to a school further away presents logistical and financial challenges. Additionally, the sense of community and identity that our students and parents cherish will be lost. Statistics show that continuity in schooling significantly enhances academic performance and emotional well-being of students.
The proposal states that the approximately 600 MLK8 students will be bussed to Peskoe K-8 (max capacity is 920 students, with 738 currently enrolled) and Leisure City K-8 ( max capacity of 1,140 students with 1,005 currently enrolled). This leaves a gap of nearly 300 students with no designated school per the proposal. This will also overextend an already struggling transportation system with the busses that serve MLK8 already regularly (reportedly1-2 times per week) being late or absent. With truancy (students who accumulate 15 or more unexcused absences) at a staggering 17% last year, the ABC proposal will only make it harder for the volunerable community MLK8 serves to not only get to school, but to be engaged and confident in the education they are receiving.
We urge the MDCPS Board to reject the ABC proposal and explore alternative solutions that do not involve dissolving our school. This could include switching campuses with Air Base K-8 Center or, in alignment with the importance of MLK8 to its community, by making MLK-8 a (pre-) K-12. We believe there is a path forward that values all students, preserves our community, and fosters educational excellence.
