Dear Sadiq,
We’ve just about reached 100,000 signatures to save fabric and London’s nightlife on my petition, in addition to this we’ve seen over 900 letters that have been sent to Islington council in support of the club. The support has been incredible and I’m eternally grateful to everyone who has signed and shared the petition.
I’m sure I can speak for all of us when I say thank you for taking your time to respond to my letter, it means a lot that you’re listening to us and showing your support. However, (and again I’m sure I speak for most) I’m disappointed that you chose to link to the Islington Gazette article which referred to dubious and unsubstantiated claims against fabric.
It undermines not only the very important issue at hand but also your own supposedly good intentions.
The report is full of potentially damaging, unfounded claims, especially about the integrity of fabric’s search and security team. fabric’s door searches are renowned for their thoroughness to the point that they are criticised for being invasive. Also, presenting an observation by a single witness that 80% of club goers were under the influence of drugs as fact is not something that I think the Mayor’s office should endorse as credible.
It’s just so disappointing to have this lack of understanding that no matter how well you search you cannot stop people smuggling drugs into licenced premises – even maximum security prisons are rife with drugs.
I think it’s time now we all get real about the situation and look at harm reduction with drugs as opposed to looking at it as an issue of crime. If we really care about making clubs safer then we need to take the idea of drug testing kits seriously.
At Secret Garden festival this year police worked alongside Charity the Loop for the first time, please read Guardian article on it here https://goo.gl/6OAygm the best telling quote for me in the article is this : “Around a quarter of people who brought in their drugs then asked us to dispose of them when they discovered that they had been mis-sold or were duds. We were taking dangerous substances out of circulation.”
Openness, information and education is how we will minimize the risks of drug taking.
Closing fabric, or putting harder restrictions on fabric will do nothing to solve this problem just move it somewhere else, I really hope you will consider my points and help open this dialogue wider to help save lives and the London night time economy.
I’d also like to thank everyone else who has supported the petition so far – the response has truly been amazing. Please keep sharing and doing what you can to get the word out.
Best wishes,
Jacob
