Save Lives - Implement Speed Bumps/Lower Speed Limit on Manion Avenue
The issue
Our family was recently devastated when our beloved dog, Winston, was struck and killed by a car on our road. This tragic accident is the latest of numerous pet fatalities on our street in recent years and many of us have shared terrifying stories of witnessing near misses with our kids playing outside.
Living in Manion Avenue is wonderful, with so much outdoor space to enjoy, but the risk involved in simply stepping outside to enjoy our neighbourhood is becoming an unbearable burden every day. Many young children of all ages regularly play outside, and it's our responsibility to ensure their safety.
Even the most diligent, safety conscious parents/pet owners know how hard it is to be "always on" taking care of young children and/or excitable young pets. They too feel the daily risk of the high volume of cars speeding up and down our road, especially by the non-residents who use the Oval for sport all year round.
Manion Avenue is a high-density, cul-de-sac street with frequent parked traffic on both sides, imperceptibly cloaking the danger of the fast-moving vehicles to those vulnerable ones: the elderly, the children, and pets who live here.
The risk faced by our neighbourhood isn't just based on our personal anguish, but a palpable dread shared by many others in the community that there is a very real risk of more tragic incidents. We believe that by introducing speed reduction humps and lowering the current speed limit, we can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and fatalities on our road. Statistics show that traffic calming measures, such as speed humps, can reduce accidents by 40% (National Association of City Transportation Officials).
Your signature on this petition will be used in an urgent appeal to the local council to take immediate action by installing speed humps and reducing the speed limit on Manion Avenue. The safety of all our community members should never be compromised. Please sign this petition to support the cause for a safer community and reduce the risk of another tragic accident.
Winston was a cherished and loved member of our family and a (very) active member of our wonderful local dog community. By signing this petition, we hope that no one has to endure the grief we are feeling and that we use Winston's passing for the purpose of reducing the risk of similar tragedies happening to his local buddies. Winston loved kids too, and he would be honoured to have his life dedicated to keeping them safe on our street.
