We, the bike taxi partners of Chennai want to bring to your attention the potential ban on bike taxi services which would have severe implications on our livelihoods and the overall transportation landscape in our city. 

Evolution of Bike Taxi services in Chennai

Cost-effective: Over the last few years, bike taxis have become an essential part of our transport infrastructure, offering a convenient and cost-effective way to commute
Quick and efficient travel: Particularly in congested locations where conventional transit options have constraints, they act as an important first-and-last-mile connectivity alternative 
Accessibility: In addition to lowering traffic congestion and carbon emissions, bike taxi services have helped thousands of riders to hail a ride on-demand, providing them with the flexibility to request a trip anywhere they need it

What a ban on Bike Taxi services means 

Loss of income: If the government decides to ban motorbike taxi services, it would suddenly take away our jobs and leave us struggling to make ends meet
Unemployment and financial instability: These services have provided flexible earning opportunities, particularly for unemployed youth and individuals from marginalised communities. By banning bike taxis, the government would risk depriving 1,00,000+ drivers of their livelihoods, pushing them back into unemployment and financial uncertainty
Social and psychological impact: We take pride in driving bike taxi services and a ban would force many of the drivers to suddenly scout for new jobs while dealing with uncertainties 

Suggestions for way ahead 

Regulation: Implementing comprehensive regulations for bike taxi services that address concerns related to safety, insurance coverage, licensing, and passenger protection
Collaboration: Encouraging collaboration between relevant stakeholders, including bike taxi companies, local authorities, and transportation experts, to develop a framework that balances the interests of drivers and passengers
Public Opinion: Conducting surveys or public hearings to gather feedback from citizens, riders, and drivers to understand their perspectives and incorporate them into decision-making processes

We firmly believe that a ban on bike taxi services would be a poor response to the challenges they may pose. By working together to regulate and formalize this industry, we can ensure a sustainable and inclusive transportation ecosystem that benefits us all.
