Currently, Airbnbs are illegal in Lake Worth Beach, but the ordinance is not enforced. As we face a housing crisis, and short-term rental investment properties increasingly dot our streets, we want neighborhoods to be for neighbors, not vacation rentals.

While many cities have their hands tied because the state preempted them from regulating short-term rentals, Lake Worth Beach’s ordinance banning rentals under 60 days was “grandfathered” in.

The mayor and commissioners should enforce the city's code to stop the proliferation of short-term rentals that are taking over our neighborhoods.

We have seen the consequences of inaction:

• "Hotelization" of neighborhoods
• Reduction in housing supply
• Reduction in long-term rentals/Increases in rent
• Loud parties/Nuisance complaints
• Real estate speculation/Absentee property owners
• Gentrification of neighborhoods
• Increase in crime (1, 2)

The problem of Airbnbs threatening neighborhoods is not limited to Lake Worth Beach. Neighbors across the county are fed up.
