The Issue

Lake Paran is in crisis. After the tragic drowning of a camper in July 2024, the community waited for real change — but none came. The nonprofit responsible for managing the lake has failed to implement a public safety plan or meaningfully restore programming. Now, Lake Paran’s future is in jeopardy.

We’re calling on the Lake Paran Recreational Trust and the Vermont Attorney General to:

 1. Publicly release an updated safety and operations plan

 2. Investigate financial and legal compliance of the Trust

 3. Allow a mission-aligned acquisition or restructuring that preserves public access, restores trust, and protects lives

Over the past year, our beloved Lake Paran has fallen into silence, neglect, and disrepair. Once a thriving center for summer fun, nature exploration, and youth programs, it is now closed off, uncertain, and mismanaged.

In July 2024, a camper tragically drowned at Lake Paran — a heartbreaking event that should have led to stronger safeguards and deeper transparency. But to this day, no public safety plan has been released. Access has diminished, programs are gone, and there’s no clear vision for the lake’s future.

This community deserves better. The public deserves to know:

 • Is the lake safe?

 • Where are the funds going?

 • Why have stakeholders been shut out?

We are calling for:

 • A full public safety audit and transparent operations report

 • State intervention if the nonprofit continues to neglect its duties

 • An opportunity for new stewardship — with accountability, collaboration, and community input

Lake Paran should never be treated like private property. It is a public trust and a sacred space for families, children, and generations to come.

Please sign and share this petition. Together, we can protect Lake Paran and ensure it is restored, respected, and reborn.
