SAVE LAKE LOGAN IN HOCKING HILLS

The Issue

Since its creation in 1955, Lake Logan has been a sanctuary for our community, providing a source of joy, relaxation, and economic prosperity to the Hocking Hills, the most visited state park in Ohio. But today, our beloved lake is facing a crisis that threatens its very existence. It's time to come together as a community and take action to save Lake Logan.

A Crisis That Spans Generations

For nearly 70 years, Lake Logan has been the heart of our community, offering us moments of tranquility and connection with nature. Yet, the natural process of silting is causing the lake to disappear before our eyes. If left unaddressed, sedimentation will continue to accumulate, making the lake shallower, warmer, and overrun by vegetation. Weeds, fueled by sediment, will further choke the lake, leading to a grim fate as a swamp.

Why Act Now?

The urgency is clear. In the past 10 years, a very significant amount of silt and muck have blanketed our lake, causing an alarming overgrowth of vegetation that left many areas of the lake with less than three feet of water. Nothing, however, is more ominous than the accelerated rate with which the American Lotus has taken over its west side during the last two summers. Time is running out, and we must act today to prevent Lake Logan from slipping into the point of no return.

What's at Stake?

The loss of Lake Logan is not just a loss of natural beauty; it's a blow to our local economy, our livelihoods, and our overall quality of life in the Hocking Hills. The economic repercussions will be catastrophic, affecting businesses related to fishing, aquatic rentals, property rentals, beach concessions, and tourism. The environment will suffer too, impacting the delicate balance of flora and fauna around the lake.

Our Path to Restoration - THE PETITION

We've identified three crucial actions that can reverse Lake Logan's decline, but we need the support of our state and local officials to make it a reality through tangible allocation of funding.

We, the undersigned, appeal to the State of Ohio, through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, to take the following measures:

  1. Expeditious Dredging: Remove years of  significant accumulation of sediment from all areas of the lake (not just the upper pools) to achieve near original lake water depths.
  2. Long-Term Lake Management Plan: Implement a comprehensive lake management plan that ensures periodic timely maintenance, water quality testing, control of aquatic vegetation, and compliance with all Ohio Department of Natural Resources requirements, including but not limited to the division of Ohio State Parks and Watercraft.
  3. Dam Repair: Repair main outlet valve at the dam so the lake can be lowered to a winter pool like most ODNR lakes in Ohio. This is necessary to impair vegetative growth along the shoreline, minimize damage to boat docks, and facilitate boat dock construction and repair.

These actions come with a high cost, but the price of inaction is immeasurable. Restoring vast areas of clean water will rejuvenate Lake Logan, bringing back the aquatic activities we cherish.
