Petition to the Government of Kerala for Urgent Flood Mitigation and River Restoration

Our Appeal:

Kottayam is known for its beautiful rivers, backwaters, fertile lands, and resilient communities. Yet, with every monsoon, thousands of families face the fear of flooding that damages homes, farms, businesses, schools, places of worship, and public infrastructure.

While heavy rainfall cannot be prevented, its impact can be significantly reduced through better management of our rivers and waterways.

Many residents, environmental experts, and local organizations have expressed concern that siltation, accumulated debris, plastic waste, and restricted river channels have reduced the natural drainage of the Meenachil River into Vembanad Lake. As rainfall becomes more intense, these challenges deserve urgent scientific attention and coordinated action.

Floods should not become an accepted part of life for the people of Kottayam.

We respectfully request the Government of Kerala to take immediate, science-based action to improve flood resilience and restore the natural flow of the Meenachil River.

We Request the Government to:

• Conduct an urgent scientific assessment of the Meenachil River, its outflow into Vembanad Lake, and all major drainage bottlenecks.
• Implement priority measures—including desiltation, dredging where appropriate, removal of debris, plastic waste, invasive vegetation, and other obstructions identified through technical studies.
• Accelerate pending river restoration and flood mitigation projects in the Kottayam region.
• Establish a long-term monitoring and maintenance program to keep waterways clear and functioning effectively.
• Strengthen environmental protection and waste management to prevent future blockages.
• Publish a transparent action plan with timelines and regular public progress updates.

Why This Matters

• Every year, countless families rebuild their lives after flooding. Farmers lose crops, small businesses suffer financial setbacks, students miss school, and communities face repeated uncertainty.
• Preventive action today is far less costly than rebuilding after every flood.
