The Issue

We advocate for the continuation of Korean and support a diverse, inclusive, and globally-oriented academic environment and respectfully request to restore Korean at Camosun College.

The decision to cut Korean has been explained as a response to budget shortages and low enrollment. However, we are deeply concerned for the following reasons:

Academic and Cultural Value: The Korean courses have historically served not only international students but also domestic students interested in Korean culture and study abroad opportunities. They contribute to the college’s cultural and linguistic diversity and enhance the richness of the academic environment.

Ongoing Cultural Interest: Interest in Korean language and culture has remained consistent at Camosun for many years. This is reflected in past enrollment numbers and the ongoing popularity of the annual Korean Cultural Festival, which benefits both the college and the broader community.

Limited Access in B.C.: Few colleges or universities in BC offer Korean language courses. Teaching Korean at Camosun provides a unique and valuable opportunity for students to engage with Korean language and culture, which has attracted students to choose Camosun over the years.

We believe that eliminating Korean is a shortsighted decision that undermines the college's commitment to inclusive and diverse education. We think it all the more shortsighted at a time when we ought to be looking to places such as Korea to expand our trade. We respectfully request that the college administration reconsider and reinstate Korean at Camosun.
