The Issue

Despite growing outcry from residents, Escalante Golf is moving forward with its plans for 28 new houses that will wipe the Kingsmill soccer field and picnic grounds as we know them off the map. We can’t let this happen without making our voices heard.

For decades, residents of the Kingsmill on the James community have been gathering at the neighborhood soccer field and picnic grounds for events with neighbors and friends. These beloved open spaces are host to festivals, community picnics, youth soccer lessons, concerts, campout fundraisers, milestone birthday parties, and countless other events and informal gatherings.

These places can’t simply be replaced and relocated elsewhere... They are inextricably linked to our very identity in the collective memories of our community members.

Furthermore, plans for the proposed development show houses in close proximity to the 300-year-old remnants of the former Kingsmill Plantation, a site added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. William Kelso, archaeologist and author of “Kingsmill Plantations 1619-1800: Archaeology of Country Life in Colonial Virginia,” has pointed to the area of the soccer field as a location of additional archaeological significance.

We, the undersigned, are calling on Escalante Golf to reconsider its development proposal that we believe will gut the beating heart of our community.

Sign our petition to show Escalante that we are not a small group of outspoken individuals, but many voices representing a wide cross-section of Kingsmill.
