Save Kildare's hedgehogs from the unnecessary destruction of a pristine habitat!

Hedgehogs have full protection in Ireland under the wildlife act of 2000. Their habitats are protected under the EU Habitats directive. Please sign this petition and help us save a well established hedgerow in Co. Kildare from being destroyed. Hedgehog numbers are in decline and ever single hedgerow matters, not only to our spiky friends but for all manner of Irish flora and fauna that depend on them for their survival.
The removal of an established hedgerow forms part of proposed development at Scoil Mhuire junior and senior schools, Ballymany, Newbridge, Co. Kildare. Planning permission was granted by Kildare County Council and the school hopes to commence the building project early in the new year. The proposed removal of the hedgerow and trees is to accommodate an access route to a playing field, for which other alternate options exist. The hedgerow does not impede at all on the actual construction of the new buildings proposed. It is also the case that the school is now claiming ownership of the hedgerow in order to remove it.
Residents and conservation groups are very upset at the proposed destruction of these mature trees and hedgerow. This wonderful urban habitat and established eco-system is teeming with birds and wildlife and its destruction sadly reflects a lack of ecological and environmental awareness by what is a designated green school.
Furthermore we believe that the proposed destruction of the hedgerow and trees, with the subsequent reduction of adjoining green areas in our Estate contravenes the stated objectives of Section 3.2, Biodiversity and Flora and Fauna in the Environmental Report of the current Kildare Development Plan.
Many different species of birds and wildlife nest and live in the hedgerow and trees including hedgehogs. Over the past number of years I have often encountered hedgehogs at the hedgerow in the early morning. The hedgerow is their natural home and a number are most definitely hibernating in it at present. The destruction of this hedgerow will result in the horrific deaths of the existing hedgehogs and remove a natural habitat and home for future generation of this incredible, unique species.
