I had a very nice conversation tonight with Engineer Jim Barker with VS Engineering, Inc. Jim and I exchanged messages a few months back, and he called tonight to talk about the Upper Bridge specifically. He mentioned that he has restored over 50 bridges in Wyoming, Indiana, Vermont and a few more states. He said he has seen some truss bridges that were not worth saving, but our bridge, the Upper Bridge was special. He noted that the design elements were top notch, and has never seen anything like that before. He also mentioned after doing a preliminary test on the bridge's iron, that he was certain it could be brought up to a load capacity of 15 tons to allow for an Ambulance to cross, and return it to normal light load vehicle traffic. One of the best things heard was that these bridges can be maintained almost indefinitely. A bridge like this should be seen as a value for cultural tourism in the area, and that it could last for 100+ years if rehabilitated correctly. These bridges are a piece of local history and maintaining them is the right course of action, and could potentially remain in place for several hundred more years. We put Jim in touch with Wrought Iron Bridge Works to work together, and also forwarded contact information to our town supervisors to get the ball moving on this. Thank you Jim Barker for your time this evening!
