The Issue

Growing up near the lush landscapes of Kaziranga National Park, I have been a firsthand witness to the majestic beauty of its dense forests and the incredible diversity of wildlife that call it home. The park isn't just a local treasure — it's a global marvel, hosting the highest population of the rare one-horned rhinoceroses in the world, along with a range of other endangered species like the Bengal tiger, Asian elephant, and the Gangetic dolphin.

However, this sanctuary is under siege. Illegal encroachments, deforestation, and human-wildlife conflicts are increasingly threatening these habitats. The annual monsoon floods, exacerbated by unchecked developmental activities, further endanger the fragile ecosystem. If these trends continue unchecked, Kaziranga could lose its unique biodiversity, and the world would be stripped of one of its priceless natural wonders.

Kaziranga National Park sprawls across the Brahmaputra River floodplains in Assam, but its protection must be a concern for all of India and beyond. It's imperative that we recognize the park as a critical biodiversity hotspot that requires urgent conservation efforts. The government of Assam and the central authorities must strengthen enforcement of anti-encroachment laws and execute sustainable tourism policies to manage human pressure.

Moreover, it's crucial to bolster community-led conservation programs that harness local knowledge to protect the environment while ensuring livelihoods. Enhancing ranger capabilities, funding scientific research on habitat conservation, and deploying technology for monitoring wildlife migration are some of the effective strategies that need immediate implementation.

Kaziranga is not only a UNESCO World Heritage site but also a symbol of our commitment to preserving the planet's ecological balance. We owe it to the next generations to safeguard this ecosystem that supports countless lives.

Please join me in urging the authorities to take decisive action now. Sign this petition to ensure that Kaziranga's ecological forest remains a thriving sanctuary for its wildlife inhabitants. Together, we can make a difference.
