Save Jocks Lodge Local Businesses!
Why this petition matters

This petition urges the Edinburgh Council to reconsider the demolition proposal and save the local businesses of Jocks Lodge, Smokey Brae and London Road.
The redevelopment proposal is:
- unwanted - residents and visitors treasure these local businesses.
- illogical - plenty of student accommodation is already in the area
- damaging - would see significant economic losses in the area
Whilst a fresh start for the Jocks Lodge area may have made sense at the closing of the Barrel House, the same reasoning does not apply over twelve months later. The rejuvenated street is thriving with "The Willow", a hot spot for local, students, families and tourists alike. In combination with the Ball Room, this area is an attractive and lucrative hub for the community.
The redevelopment of Jocks Lodge, Smokey Brae and London Road into student accommodation is redundant, following the build of over 600 student flats in the vicinity. Removing all the local recreational spaces and amenities in the area, including The Willow and Limelite will not only drive away local residents, but an area with no (safe) night life is not an attractive offer for students or families looking for housing.
Counter to revitalisation, the demolition of a historical local business hub will be responsible for driving away all spending on local businesses in the area and mass job loss. This could quickly lead to a depression of the state of Jocks Lodge, Smokey Brae, London Road, and the wider East Lothian area.
