Three members from the Beach Parkway Peninsula Association met with Councilman Steinke last week. The results were not encouraging! We must continue to speak up and fight back as the council appears to be uninterested in hearing opposing views to the proposed changes to the park!
The synopsis of the meeting, as written by one BPPA member that attended:
“To summarize Mr. Steinke’s position after my going over all of the talking points:
A Cape Coral consultant, when evaluating all of Cape Coral relative to it’s claim to be a ‘water paradise’ told the City that it needed more boat destinations on the Cape.
Hence, in looking at JC Park with its large water views and access, it became a target for installation of boat docks and to have something there to attract boaters to the Park,
hence the thought about food availability, splash pads etc.
He said that if anything major is done to the Park then by ‘Code’ the invasive trees need to be removed.
He said he would only want trees that could immediately provide shade, though they would not be near the size of those being removed.
He said that while the general meeting in August could not be delayed for the ‘snowbirds’ because of the City's Schedule he would recommend some form of electronic ‘Zoom’ capability for those who are away.
He said he would not vote for any park change that would remove current park capabilities, such a grills, benches, pavilions, etc.
When all was said and done he equated this consultant as a Doctor and we just have to close our eyes and take the medicine - I pointed out to him that sometimes Doctors are wrong!
Though it was very polite and cordial, I would say we didn't get close to changing his mind about anything and he felt we would all be very happy with the park 2 years from now.
Let me know if you have any questions.
I wish the outcome could have been better.”
