Save Jakkur Aerodrome space

Save Jakkur Aerodrome space
The Issue
Instead of focusing on developing green spaces, once again another lung space in Jakkur, is being planned to be a commercial hub and sports stadium.
Being having born in Bengaluru, it pains many of its citizens see the city loose its green cover and become this chaotic vehicular mess that it is today. Having lived in Jakkur for the past 15 years, we are deeply connected to this green oasis that has been an essential part of our community in North Bangalore. Known as one of our last remaining green and wind corridors, the Jakkur Aerodrome is facing an imminent threat from the proposed construction of a sports stadium and commercial complex. This plan jeopardises the very essence of what makes Jakkur unique and essential to Bengaluru’s fragile ecosystem.
Bengaluru, our vibrant city, is already grappling with severe environmental challenges including escalating air pollution, dwindling green spaces, and increasing temperatures. Introducing such a large-scale commercial project in Jakkur will significantly block natural air and wind flow. It will lead to increased vehicular emissions and create a heavier traffic burden, contributing to the already deteriorating Air Quality Index (AQI) that our city struggles with daily.
Statistics from the Central Pollution Control Board show that Bengaluru's AQI often breaches safe levels, putting residents' health at risk. Experts warn that the urban heat island effect caused by unchecked construction like this only exacerbates the situation. Preserving Jakkur Aerodrome as an open green space is crucial not only for the health of Jakkur’s residents but for everyone in Bengaluru.
The plan to build such a massive commercial establishment will disrupt the peaceful lives of thousands of residents who depend on Jakkur’s natural environment for cleaner air and a healthier lifestyle. The importance of maintaining Jakkur as an open green space cannot be overstated in our struggle against climate change and urban pollution.
We urgently call upon the authorities of Bengaluru and Karnataka to recognize the invaluable environmental role that Jakkur Aerodrome plays and to abandon the plans for commercialisation. We need policies that prioritize sustainability and health over reckless development.
By signing this petition, you join our fight to protect Jakkur Aerodrome from commercialisation, preserving it for future generations and ensuring a healthier city for all. Let’s safeguard our environment and keep Bengaluru’s last green lungs alive.
