Save international cricket: Launch a 3-tier system
The Issue
Growing up, I vividly remember the thrill of watching cricket matches that kept me on the edge of my seat. Like millions of cricket fans around the world, my love for this sport runs deep, from witnessing the unmatched tension of a high-stakes international battle to feeling the excitement of each ball bowled. However, over the last few years, something has fundamentally changed in international cricket.
The gap between series like THE ASHES and matches involving teams like West Indies vs. Sri Lanka or Australia vs. Sri Lanka has become glaringly obvious. This isn't just a minor difference—it is a chasm that affects the excitement and competitiveness of the sport globally. The intensity that once characterized all international matches feels diluted. This widening gap is not doing justice to teams lower in the ICC rankings, nor is it helping nations where cricket should grow as both a passion and profession.
I believe the key to revitalizing international cricket lies in the introduction of a 3-tier promotion/relegation pyramid. This format has proven successful in other sports for increasing both competition and global interest. Imagine a system where every match matters—not just for winning a series but for survival in the top tiers, or being promoted from the lower ones. Such a structure would ensure that every team has something tangible to strive for, and every nation can nurture its potential on an even playing field.
A 3-tier system would allow cricket nations of all standings to aspire toward greater competitiveness. Top teams in the lower tiers could earn their way into higher levels, while underperforming top-tier teams would have to defend their standings. This would reignite competitiveness, ensuring more thrilling matches across all platforms and media.
To the International Cricket Council (ICC), I urge you to consider this change. Look to other sports, like football, where tiered leagues have not only sustained interest but have expanded it. A tiered structure would promise more meaningful games, help reduce the disparity between teams, and inject a needed adrenaline rush into global cricket.
Please sign this petition to tell the ICC that it's time to evolve cricket into a sport that offers high stakes and genuine competition for every team. Together, we can drive a brighter, more thrilling future for international cricket.here is how itll work
The modern international cricket calendar is broken and full of meaningless bilateral "dead rubbers."
I got tired of watching the game lose its soul, so I spent months breaking down schedules and financial models to engineer a real solution: The 8-8-8 Blueprint.
This proposal restructures international cricket into a 3-Tier Promotion/Relegation League over a 2-year cycle:
🏏 42 High-Stakes Matches: Every game impacts a trophy or relegation.
🗓️ The 8-8-8 Month Split: 8 months for the league, 8 months strictly for the IPL/franchise window, and 8 months for historic series (like the Ashes) & player rest.
🛡️ Player & Pitch Guardrails: Full injury replacements allowed & mandatory stadium rotations to protect the pitches.
💼 Total ICC Authority: The ICC retains absolute control over team selections, broadcasting, and ticketing.
I am formally sending this framework to the ICC Strategy and Development Committee, but I need your help to show them that global fans demand a true, unyielding sporting meritocracy.
