The Issue
What the “Save HND” Movement Is
“Save HND” is a powerful, peaceful, and emotional grassroots movement led by Jain Sadhus, students, alumni, Jain priests, and the entire Jain community to protect the *Seth Hirachand Nemchand (HND) Jain Temple & Boarding in Model Colony, Pune.*
This decades-old charitable institution houses the historic Shri 1008 BhagwanMahavir Digambar Jain Temple /mandir which is the go-to place of worship for almost all Digambar Jains residing in Pune.
This institution has provided food, shelter, and education to thousands of underprivileged Jain students for over 65 years.
* Recently, the trustees reportedly entered into an agreement to sell or transfer the trust’s 3.5-acre land to a private developer — an act that the community strongly believes violates the founding charitable purpose of HND and was done without proper permissions or transparency.
*The movement began as a local protest in Pune and has now transformed into a nationwide awakening, uniting the entire Sakal Jain Samaj under one call — “Save HND.”
The movement received spiritual strength and direction when Āchārya Shri Guptinandi Gurudev blessed the campaign and gave mārgdarshan, inspiring thousands to stay united in truth and non-violence.
The members of ASHA (Association of Students of HND Alumni) have also filed a petition in the Bombay High Court challenging the illegal sale and seeking full protection for the hostel and temple property.
Why This Matters (Legal & Public Interest)
- Charitable trust property has strict legal safeguards: Land held by charitable or educational trusts cannot be sold or diverted for private commercial use without statutory approvals. In Maharashtra, the Charity Commissioner oversees such transactions and can issue status quo orders and inquiries. ➤ In this case, a status quo order has already been issued, freezing any sale, transfer, or construction.
- Breach of trust and misuse of authority: Petitioners allege that the trustees acted beyond their powers (ultra vires) and against the original trust deed. If proven, the sale can be declared null and void, and the trustees may face legal and financial consequences.
- Community heritage at stake: The HND Temple & hostel are not mere buildings — they represent generations of faith, education, & service. Losing this space means losing a sacred legacy.
The Movement Today
- Mass Support Across India: On 27 October 2025, more than 150 cities across India witnessed peaceful morchas and rallies under the banner of #Save HND, showing massive unity from the Sakal Jain Samaj.
- Nationwide Anshan Call: On 29 October 2025, Jain community members from every corner of India will observe Anshan (fast) and collective prayers demanding complete cancellation of the sale and action against those responsible.
- Guidance & Unity: With the blessings of Āchārya Shri Guptinandi Gurudev, the movement continues peacefully and powerfully under the values of Jain dharma — truth, ahimsa, and sacrifice.
Public Message
“Save HND is not just a protest — it’s a pledge to protect our heritage, our temple, and our hostel.
We welcome a fair and transparent inquiry and urge the authorities to uphold the trust’s founding purpose.
Our demand is simple — a legally registered cancellation of the sale, a public inquiry into trustee actions, and the restoration of HND to the community it was created to serve.”
