The Issue

I just received intel from RERA Canada are saving the 2 remaining locomotives and rolling stock from the bankrupt York Durham Heritage Railway.

The list below includes the following pieces

  1. Ontario Northland RS-3 #1310 built in 1951 by Montreal Locomotive Works ,
  2. Roberval & Sagueney RS-3 #22 built in 1955 by Montreal Locomotive Works
  3. Canadian National heavyweight lounge car #15041 Bruce Kearney built in 1930 by Canadian Car and Foundry.
  4.  Canadian Pacific Angus caboose #434908 built in 1953 by Canadian Pacific's Angus Shops,
  5. Canadian National double bedroom sleeper #1012 built in 1954 by Pullman Standard,
  6. Ontario Northland coach #842 built in 1949 by Pullman Standard for the Norfolk & Western which should be returned to the US.
  7. Canadian Northern Colonist Sleeper #4960 built in 1919 by Pullman Standard.

#4960 unfortunately is not included on the RERA's website which is not fair since it's the most historically significant piece Canadian railway heritage, and must be saved by the RERA so it can be sent to Expo Rail like the other pieces of equipment. But I am including on my list because it deserve a second chance in preservation. Canada should preserve it's railway heritage instead of erasing it from existence.

#4960 has some history behide it when it started it's life on the Canadian Northern Railways transcontinental passenger trains transporting people between Montreal and Vancouver. Later when the Canadian Northern was absorbed to form Canadian National Railways it continued it's career until getting bumped down to Toronto, Hamilton trains shuttling commuters from 1954 to 1967 when GO Transit took over commuter service.

In the early 1970's Canadian National decided to scrap most of 4960's sisters since they were owned by predecessor Canadian Northern by soaking the interiors with gasoline and burning them to the ground on remote sidings in Ontario Canada.

Thankfully #4960 survived and was bought by the York Durham Heritage Railway in 1994. It had a long excursion train career until being retired two years ago. Now #4960 sits waiting a uncertain fate but that can change if this petition gets 200 signatures. A US preservation company is trying to take some of #4960's parts which should not happen because Canada's railway heritage should not be for sale.

Unfortunately RERA Canada did not give me a location in Canada where they are sending the Canadian equipment so the location I'm offering is to send them to the Canadian Railway Museum/Expo Rail in Saint-Constant Quebec where the equipment can be restored to it's former glory.

Please contact General Manager Dan Barnes of Railroad Equipment Restoration Association of Canada to ask him to save #4960 and send it with the rest of the Canadian railway equipment to the Canadian Railway Museum/Expo Rail in Saint-Constant Quebec. Except for the Norfolk & Western coach #842 which can be sent back to the US.
