The beauty and charm of downtown Staunton lies in its historic buildings and preservation. It is why tourists flock to Staunton and the city is written up in numerous "best downtown" lists. A new proposed expansion and renovation of the Augusta County Courthouse would completely undermine this charm and negate the efforts to preserve the historic architecture of Staunton. In addition to covering up the rear of the courthouse and the existing floral friezes there, this proposal would completely eliminate Barristers Row and along with it numerous historic buildings. These include a building at 5 Lawyers row which has an addition by noted architect T.J Collins, 11 South Augusta Street which features unique Italianate details and almost all the buildings of Lawyer Row built in the 1840's. In addition to this proposal destroying several historic buildings, the new design would become an eyesore along the skyline. Towering at 5 stories tall, the new design would dwarf the surrounding historic buildings and become one of the largest buildings in downtown Staunton. The façade of the proposed expansion also does not lend itself to its surroundings, lacking any of the architectural elements of the rest of historic downtown. This would not only affect the feel of downtown but would dissuade tourists, costing local businesses revenue and the city much needed tax dollars. This proposal is already threatening to shut one local business, Barrister Books, which is located right in the middle of the expansion. This financial burden would not only come at the cost of local businesses and lost tourism but would be paid by every citizen of Augusta County who would have to pay for the proposed 60 million plus cost through increased taxes. It is for these reasons among others that we the citizens of Staunton City and Augusta County oppose the proposed expansion and renovation of the Augusta County Courthouse.
