Yesterday the @universityofgeorgia announced a compromise. https://news.uga.edu/uga-updates-legion-field-redevelopment-project-to-add-recreation-options-for-students/
They announced that Legion Pool will now be replaced with 20 parking spaces and four sand beach volleyball courts.
The use of the word compromise is misleading. The definition of compromise is: an agreement or result reached between two parties to better satisfy each party’s needs or desires, usually implying some give-and-take from both sides. There was no such give-and-take.
The use of the word compromise is disrespectful to the 2,366 supporters of the "Save Legion Pool" petition and the thousands of annual pool users. UGA’s own data cites 10,717 visits to the pool in 2025. Of that number, 5,000 visits were made by children; 1,071 by students during the nine weeks the pool is open. The UGA beach volleyball club has just under 300 members. That is 700 students short of the annual student usage of the pool.
A compromise implies that the beach volleyball courts were decided upon between mutual parties.
Let the record state that the University of Georgia did not reach out to any of us to reach this compromise.
Let the record state that the University of Georgia did not announce this compromise until after it had been voted upon by the Board of Regents on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
Let the record state that the estimated cost for the redevelopment of the area where Legion Pool sits is estimated to be $1.5 million (as best we can tell from open records requests since the University of Georgia has not been forthcoming in sharing information).
Let the record state that UGA's own hired consultants put repair estimates for Legion Pool between $900,000 and $2 million.
Let the record state that the University of Georgia said the reasons they wanted to demolish Legion Pool were because the repair price tag was too high and they wanted to better serve students.
As far as we can tell, four beach volleyball courts does neither.
Look at the numbers.
