Despite the fact that the Board of Regents ignored the community's input about Legion Pool and the Governor, an Athenian, also ignored the community's wishes, we continue to fight to save Legion Pool.
Governor Brian Kemp chose to sign the executive order to demolish historic legion pool on Friday, January 16, just 72 hours after the entire university system of Georgia Board of Regents voted to demolish the pool.
This quick timeline reveals that this project was fast-tracked from the beginning in an effort to diminish participation from students, faculty, staff, and the wider pool community: the closed door meetings of the UGA working group and the consistent lack of engagement and responsiveness on behalf of UGA and USG to the multiple inquiries and concerns of the committed pool community show that UGA, USG and Governor Kemp do not want to listen to our voices. They do not care for our concerns.
If someone from one of these groups had responded to our repeated, respectful requests for dialogue, this process would have been more transparent and inclusive, but this did not happen.
Instead, UGA and USG have shown us their true colors.
While there is not much left that we can do to save legion pool, we are not giving up.
We encourage anyone who has felt left out of this process to raise your voice: if you are a student involved with the student government association @ugasga , make sure everyone there understands your position; if you are on the faculty senate, we encourage you to bring forward concerns about this process to your peers; if you are on the university council, rally your colleagues; if you are part of @ucwga.uga , please speak out; in addition, please encourage press outlets in your communities to dig deeper into this issue and not rely solely on the press releases issued by the university's pr team.
It is not too late to highlight and emphasize for the entire UGA community that this process has not been participatory. for the sake of *true* future dialogue, on any issue, we must speak up and out.
To all of those who love legion pool, know that we are not giving up. In fact, the university's disrespectful actions have galvanized us and solidified our position: choosing to demolish legion pool without community dialogue is an action against the well being of our community.
