Gouin-Lawrence-Graber House - UPDATE / Attend Landmark Meeting 11/29, 6pm

Hello Community.

Thank you so much for your support towards saving the GOUIN-LAWRENCE-GRABER HOUSE! The Nassau County Planning Commission agreed to postpone their decision until the Town of Hempstead Landmarks Commission reviews our findings to consider this stately and historic home with landmark designation. Although time is of the essence...

Myself and other community members have been working diligently to research some of the amazing history and architectural significance of this stately home. And we plan to tell a tale of the three doctors who lived in this house and their impact within the Bellmore community. We determined that Dr. Gouin was the doctor who built the home and we were able to locate the architectural firm (Weidersum of Valley Stream), the architect (Ronald M. Peck) and their architectural drawings (a sample of front house view posted here). There are various local history connections including that they were the architects for Mepham High School in 1935 and subsequent schools in Bellmore. Happy to share more information with the community including a survey assessment once we compile everything for the upcoming Landmarks Commission Meeting:

  • TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD PUBLIC HEARING of the LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION on TUESDAY, 11/29, 6:00PM.
  • The location is 350 Front Street Hempstead N.Y. 11550.
  • Hearing will be held in the Old Town Hall Courtroom on the second floor.

ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND!  The larger the community presence showing support, the better. Appreciate your time.

PLEASE NOTE:  In addition to review of the GOUIN-LAWRENCE-GRABER HOUSE for landmark status, the Landmarks Commission will be considering landmark status of the FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF BELLMORE. This beautiful historic building in the center of Bellmore Village is in danger of being demolished by a developer. We need to preserve the rich history of Bellmore, the site of a notorious bank robbery and cornerstone to our “Stroll Down Memory Lane”.

We look forward to your continuing to spread the word via this petition and attending the hearing to have our voices heard. The Bellmore Village community values its historic character, wanting to preserve it for future generations. Centre Avenue is the center of Bellmore Village and the GOUIN-LAWRENCE-GRABER HOUSE is its heart! We will appeal to the Town of Hempstead Landmarks Commission to help us achieve this goal.

Thank you!
