Hello again - we were hopeful that 1245 Edward Street would be reviewed at the June meeting, which takes place on Wednesday. So far, it's not made the agenda, although we understand the staff report is ready to go. Hmm....what could the stalling mean?
Please email Mayor Mike Savage directly and ask him to make sure this property gets reviewed this month. By July's meeting....it's scary to think what might happen, as contractors continue to walk up and down the street, surveying the house - for demolition? You can reach him at mayor@halifax.ca
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments also - just a sample here (there are so many!). "I'm signing because..."
"It's a beautiful home with historic value and character."
"My daughter went to King's at Dalhousie. Super environment and the historic community was a significant part of that."
"Heritage buildings offer a look into the history of a city that no photo can provide."
"I don't agree with tearing down a beautiful old home when we have a housing crisis."
"Dalhousie should not be tearing down historically relevant structures, for parking lots."
"Dalhousie is slowly but steadily destroying their neighbourhood, and they need to stop."
"Please listen to the community, and don't demolish this home."
"Dalhousie U should do better, and be a better neighbour."
"Once it's gone, it's gone. We can't get back our historic buildings once they're destroyed. So much is lost by tearing down these buildings. Not to mention, it is far more eco-conscious to remove and retrofit."
"1245 Edward Street is a historical heritage property with unique architecture. It should be preserved. Dalhousie U. should be ashamed of itself! The demolition must not take place!"
Here's a pic taken today of the shiny new parking lot that replaced Dal's tennis court and trees on South Street due to increased parking requirements for their new Event Centre (rink). Not what we want 1245 Edward Street to turn into! Thanks for continuing to share the petition, raise this issue with your elected officials, and attending tomorrow evening's virtual talk on stopping the demolitions (see Development Options Halifax) and walk on Saturday morning.
