Save Hickings Lane Park, Stapleford: stop the development on the greenspace
The Issue
Hickings Lane Park, Stapleford, is one of the most beautiful parks in Stapleford. It is a wonderful greenspace that provides space for the local community to engage in sport or leisure activities, has a play area for kids and a multi-use games area all free of charge and provides a location for local football, cricket and bowls teams.
As part of the £21m Stapleford Towns Fund, Broxtowe Borough Council is planning to develop a large section of the current greenspace of this park - the section running paralel to Hickings Lane road - to provide a large community/leisure centre and a fenced off 3/4G football pitch with flood lights (23/00051/REG3) - see map below. The proposed community/leisure centre will have opening times between 8 am and 10 pm every day but Saturday. The complex will also include a bar, which will serve alcohol, and use of leisure facilities will be at a cost to the local community.

Not only will this development reduce the available greenspace within the park by more than half, with impact on the health and wellbeing of park users and local residents, this will also have a negative effect on biodiversity and climate change, increase noise and pollution levels, anti-social behaviour and increase parking issues on Hickings Lane and surrounding areas (which is already a significant problem on Stapleford FC match and training days). The development will also exclude other sports activities other than football from the park. Consultation for these plans has not included residents living around the park nor users of the park not associated with any of the sports clubs.
We're fully supportive of development within Stapleford, which is much needed, and are not against development within this park, but argue that any development should not use any of the available greenspace of Hickings Lane Park - nor anywhere else in Stapleford for that matter - and use already developed land instead (as per the original plans for this park submitted as part of the initial funding bid to replace the pavillion currently present in the park). Furthermore, the development should be proportional to the infrastructure of the local area, not increase already existing issues. We are therefore opposed to the current proposed development on Hickings Lane Park!
