Stope Ecocide in Heaney Country

In Seamus Heaney’s own words a major new road through an area of wet meadows centred on Lough Beg will ‘desecrate’ a landscape that fired his imagination. Lough Beg is home to wild swans, curlews, Irish hares, otters, orchids and rare water beetles. It is not merely one of the finest bird areas in Europe, it is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, EU Special Protection Area (SPA) and Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI). Midway between Belfast and Derry/Londonderry, construction of an offline dual carriageway through peatland, wetland and woodland is adding fuel to the fires of climate change and extinction. We demand to be told the truth about this hugely wasteful scheme and to have climate and environmental science listened to. This is beyond stupid; it is ecocide.
