🏡 Save Headingley Station Allotments in Kirkstall – Stop the Development Plans!
📍 Location: Kirkstall, Leeds, UK
🆘 Urgency: Immediate community action needed
We, the residents of Kirkstall and supporters of green community spaces, urgently call on Leeds City Council to reject any plans to hand over Headingley Station Allotments to housing developers. This historic and vital green space must be protected for current and future generations.
🌱 Why This Matters:
Headingley Station Allotments are more than just patches of land. They are a thriving hub of local food growing, biodiversity, mental wellbeing, and community life — all within walking distance of a busy and densely built-up part of Kirkstall.
👉 Community Impact: Dozens of families and individuals use these plots for growing food, staying active, relieving stress, and connecting with neighbours. Many are elderly or low-income residents who depend on this space for affordable and healthy living.
👉 Environmental Loss: The destruction of the allotments would wipe out a valuable wildlife corridor and harm local biodiversity — including pollinators and native plant life — undermining Leeds’ climate and ecological priorities.
👉 Short-Sighted Planning: With multiple brownfield sites and unused commercial land across Leeds, there is no excuse to sacrifice protected green land for private development. Green space once lost cannot be replaced.
👉 Legal Protection: Allotments like these are protected under national legislation and cannot be sold or repurposed without thorough public consultation and a proven overriding need — neither of which has occurred.
❗ What We’re Demanding:
❌ Cancel any current or proposed plans to develop Headingley Station Allotments
✅ Legally protect the site as community allotment land
🗣️ Guarantee transparent and meaningful consultation with allotment holders and local residents
🌍 Honour Leeds City Council’s own Climate Emergency Declaration and commitment to sustainable, community-led planning
This is our line in the soil. If we don’t protect Headingley Station Allotments now, we risk losing them forever — and setting a dangerous precedent for other community spaces across Leeds.
✍️ SIGN this petition to show your support for protecting community green space.
📣 SHARE widely with friends, neighbours, community groups, and local representatives.
Let’s stand together to save Headingley Station Allotments — for people, for nature, and for the future.
