Harwell Elementary, a key pillar of the Lubbock community, is in jeopardy as the LISD Focus Committee is contemplating closing it and pairing or re-purposing it with another school. Harwell holds a unique place in our society, notably for being the school with the highest number of bilingual learners in the city, offering the oldest bilingual program in Lubbock. It stands as the only school welcoming newly arrived children, reflecting its inclusivity and accessibility. Harwell also brings in students from other school districts for their specialty program of their dual language. 

With remarkable teacher retention rates, Harwell attests to a nurturing and supportive work environment, which directly influences the quality of education delivered to our children. The school's location in the same plot of land with Copper Rawlings Community Center, Copper Rawlings Park, and Larry Combest Community Health and Wellness Center adds another dimension to its integral role within the local community. 

Re-purposing Harwell would not only affect the students and staff but would also create ripples in our community's fabric. We urge the LISD Focus Committee to consider the far-reaching implications of this decision. La Escuela Primaria Harwell, un pilar fundamental de la comunidad de Lubbock, está en peligro de cerrar ya que el Comité de Enfoque del LISD está considerando fusionarla o reasignarla con otra escuela. Harwell ocupa un lugar único en nuestra sociedad, especialmente por ser la escuela con el mayor número de estudiantes bilingües en la ciudad y ofreciendo el programa bilingüe más antiguo de Lubbock. Es la única escuela que da la bienvenida a niños recién llegados, reflejando su inclusión y accesibilidad. También recibe estudiantes de otros distritos escolares para su programa especializado de lenguaje dual.

Con notables tasas de retención de maestros, Harwell demuestra un ambiente de trabajo acogedor y de apoyo, lo que influye directamente en la calidad de la educación impartida a nuestros niños.
