Save Harborough’s Rewilding Project

Save Harborough’s Rewilding Project

The Issue

Please sign to show your support for the Harborough Rewilding Project which is under threat as crucial funding has been withdrawn in an unprecedented move by opposition councillors at HDC.

At last nights HDC council meeting (to discuss and approve the budget) the Tories, Reform and some Independents voted together to scrap the £660k for the rewilding project

The Market Harborough Rewilding Project is supported by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust (LRWT). It is a unique project of national significance, which would restore nature across 500 acres, bringing benefits to wildlife, people and communities.

Rather than raise their concerns through the standard channels which would have allowed time for amendments, the opposition decided to pull the funding at the last minute, even though the project has gained widespread public support and has had months of work from different professional bodies and community groups.

Cllr Lynne Taylor described the move as “being equivalent to the felling of the Sycamore Gap Tree - a symbol of hope being destroyed in such a mindless manner. The rewilding project would have benefited the whole community - a place to visit and enjoy for generations to come.”
