The Issue

Book-lovers of London, please join us to save your local Amnesty Bookshop from closure. For more than 30 years, readers and their families have found a warm welcome and a wide choice of exceptionally good-value second-hand books here.

The shop at 175 King Street is staffed by volunteers with just one paid manager. Now however, rising overheads have prompted Amnesty International to propose closing the shop this year.

This would be a great loss: we are not an ordinary charity shop, but a place of community, connection and conversation. As volunteers, we see how much the shop is valued locally.

Customers and donors remark on the surprises on our shelves, where best-sellers share space with rarities, gorgeously illustrated children's books sit alongside novels, maps, history, biography and cookbooks.

Amnesty have granted a brief "consultation period" in June and July before taking action. Please sign if you want the shop to stay open
