Save GWD 50 Theater Program

Save GWD 50 Theater Program
The Issue
I am a Senior at Greenwood High School, and I know this will not impact me as much as others, but it is still extremely important to me. Today we heard from our theater teacher that Greenwood District 50 is planning to get rid of the theater program at Greenwood High School for one to two years to help build up the ACTS program in middle school. In my musical theater class when we heard the news, we were all outraged and confused. Money should not be an issue for the district regarding the theater program since the class raises the money themselves with fundraisers, going out and gathering sponsorships, and participating in concessions during other events. The middle schoolers who are getting ready to come to Greenwood High after focusing on theater for three years will have nowhere to continue their passion for theater, except for GCT. At Greenwood High, if you are in the theater program you still go through the audition process but, you still will have a role in the show and will get to experience being in a show even if the part you play is small. The juniors in theater now will not have a senior show like some of us had before and that is extremely unfair to them. Every show that Greenwood High has put on has had at least one person say, "That was a High School? They did an amazing job." after seeing our shows. We love what we do, and we are good at it as well. We put so much time and effort into these shows so the community can have something amazing to experience. We understand that they want to do an afterschool program for it but most students either have jobs or play a sport therefore they can not participate in it and another reason why we should keep it as a class.
