We seek your support in finding our community group a new home at the disused Westall Tennis Centre in Osborne Avenue, Clayton South. Community input was recently sought by the City of Kingston Council on future uses of the site. 

Who are we?  Greenlink Sandbelt Indigenous Nursery is a community plant nursery, a charity run by volunteers. We employ a part time manager. We have been based in the City of Kingston for the past 25 years, operating on a small corner of Spring Valley Golf Course and we need to find a new home by June 2027.  

We propagate & supply plants to Kingston Council’s Gardens for Wildlife scheme, Kingston plant give aways, revegetation projects in local reserves, parks, schools, golf courses & to members of the public for residents’ gardens. We grow 40,000 plants per annum = 1,000,000 indigenous plants for the sand belt region of Melbourne to date.

How does our work support the goals and Community Vision principles of the City of Kingston?
·      Contributes to tree canopy goals with affordable plants for Council, residents,  and businesses.

.      Aids in reaching net zero goals and reduces the impact of global warming as trees consume CO2, produce oxygen and provide shade.

·      Supports biodiversity goals by providing food & habitat to local wildlife

·      Improves liveability & sustainability.

·      Beautifies private and public gardens, reserves, golf courses and streets.

·      Promotes water wise gardening with indigenous plants adapted to local conditions.

·      Supports Council’s well-being plan - mental and physical health of Kingston residents -improved by social connection through volunteering, recreational gardening and contact with nature.

·      Upskilling local people: training of volunteers, including students & the long term unemployed often leading to them gaining employment in related industries.

Why relocate to the former Westall tennis centre?

·       It is co-located with The Grange remnant bushland reserve. We propagate many of the indigenous plants that occur in the reserve. Plants can be viewed in their natural setting before being purchased from the nursery.

·       There is an opportunity to develop an environmental hub (in the former tennis club rooms) in collaboration with Friends of the Grange and other Kingston friends’ groups (e.g. Braeside), providing a home base for the annual Wedding Bush Festival.

·       Displays & Educational events can be hosted alongside the ‘real thing’ for community, school groups etc.

·       The site is ideal in terms of size and existing facilities.

We the undersigned hereby petition Kingston City Council to lease the two western tennis courts and  club room at the disused Westall Tennis Club in Osborne Avenue, Clayton South, to Greenlink Sandbelt Indigenous (plant) Nursery.
