SAVE GREAT KEPPEL ISLAND FROM INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT
$25 Million dollars in corporate welfare is now to be given by the Qld State Government to a developer on Great Keppel Island who has let his project lay dormant for ten years, whilst trying unsuccessfully to convince two separate Qld Governments to grant him assistance by creating a new form of Casino Licence for his project.
ENOUGH! We say no to the Queensland Government giving our $$ in order to provide OUTDATED Infrastructure services to TOWER HOLDINGS when the other Island residents and the Woppaburra Traditional Owners of the Keppel Island group have not been fully consulted beforehand.
The residents of GKI are self-sufficient and Tourism operators also need to look at sustainable options to meet their own Infrastructure needs. Towers plan is unwanted and outdated.
Twenty first century technologies such as solar power and water catchment are already installed in other remote locations of Australia that cater for Tourism. GREAT KEPPEL ISLAND doesn’t need power and water connected from the Mainland, it needs sustainable solutions/options put into play for the Island’s future and for future generations to enjoy its natural beauty.
It is the job of the Qld Government to provide incentives to promote sustainable Tourism options and the connection of power and water from the mainland is only a band-aid solution to make Tower’s failed development more attractive to an international buyer. The ratepayers in the Livingstone community have suffered enough from the downturn in Tourism without the ongoing burden of maintaining the costly infrastructure now proposed by the Government.
WE WANT the QLD Government to take notice of the people and not only our Mayor and his cohorts who are not representing the community transparently when planning our future with the Qld Government.
Neither our Government nor our Council have consulted adequately with the Island residents, the Woppaburra people, or the wider community over how the money could best be spent on the immediate needs of the island.
The $25 million now on the table for GKI will not buy everything else that is urgently needed such as shade structures, barbecue facilities and toilets for day tourists, emergency facilities and of course a jetty.
WE DO NOT NEED OR WANT MAINLAND POWER AND WATER!
Please sign and share far and wide on behalf of the Traditional Owners, the island residents and the people of Yeppoon and Queensland who want the world to tell our Government Don't Destroy Great Keppel Island #nopowerfortower
