Join us at 7pm on Thursday 22nd of June, in the historic St Peter’s church in Roker. Founded in AD 674–5 as one of the two churches of the Benedictine double monastery of Monkwearmouth–Jarrow Abbey. Benedict Biscop brought glaziers from Gaul to finish the church with gleaming awe inspiring stained glass windows. And, thus 1350 plus years ago, Sunderland began its love affair with glass.
We need all hands on deck to change the tide! Where shipbuilding once proudly stood, next to the ancient church, the ship-shaped building a monument to both of these ancient skills. Glass blowers and ship builders used to be guarded with fierce passion by kings of bygone days. Our own king, Charles III, opened the National Glass Centre when he was still our prince. With all the aplomb and pageantry that a royal can offer, making the National Glass Centre auspicious, and acknowledging the importance of all that the building sought to accomplish.
