Save Gilchrist County's Wildlife and Agricultural Lands from Duke Energy's Destructive Solar Project

The Issue

We, the concerned residents of Gilchrist County, FL, stand united in opposition to Duke Energy's plans to destroy 600+ acres of precious forested wildlife habitat  and agricultural lands for their self-serving solar panel project. We believe that this project will only benefit Duke Energy at the expense of our environment and local community.

1. Environmental Impact:
Duke Energy's proposed solar panel installation would result in irreversible damage to our delicate ecosystem. The destruction of 600+ acres of wildlife habitat will disrupt the natural balance, endangering numerous species that call this area home.  Species like gopher tortoises, fox squirrels, bobcats, deer, and many migratory birds. This loss would have a devastating impact on biodiversity and disrupt crucial ecological processes. Another impact it will have is the deterioration of our well water quality, with the repeated use of herbicides that are sprayed into the grounds,  to maintain the surrounding weeded areas where these panels are installed.

2. Agricultural Losses:
Gilchrist County is known for its fertile agricultural lands that provide sustenance for both our local community and beyond. By converting these valuable lands into a solar farm, Duke Energy threatens not only our food security but also the livelihoods of farmers who depend on these fields for their income.

3. Dubious Benefits:
While Duke Energy claims that this solar project will bring economic benefits to Gilchrist County, we question their true intentions behind such assertions. It is crucial to note that the energy generated by these panels will not directly benefit our local community but instead be sold elsewhere for profit.

4. Alternative Solutions:
Rather than destroying vital habitats and agricultural lands, we urge Duke Energy to explore alternative locations for their solar panel installations such as brownfields or rooftops in urban areas where land use conflicts are minimal.

5. Preserving Our Heritage:
Gilchrist County holds a unique heritage deeply rooted in its natural beauty and agricultural traditions. Allowing corporate interests to destroy this heritage for short-term gains undermines the values we hold dear and sets a dangerous precedent for future environmental decisions.

We, the undersigned, call upon Duke Energy to immediately halt their plans to destroy 600 acres of wildlife habitat and agricultural lands in Gilchrist County. We demand that they engage in an open dialogue with local residents, environmental experts, and community leaders to find alternative solutions that preserve our environment while promoting renewable energy.

Together, let us protect our wildlife, support our farmers, and safeguard the future of Gilchrist County for generations to come.
