Open a dialog and allow time for us to work together to save Good Counsel and its historic campus
The Issue
For over 100 years, the property at 52 North Broadway in White Plains, NY has been home to the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, as well as Good Counsel Academy which the order founded in 1918. The Good Counsel complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. There are over 400 students currently enrolled in the high school, and thousands of alumnae across the country.
The continued existence of this beloved school is now in jeopardy. In May 2014, the Sisters of the Divine Compassion (RDC) announced that they were exploring the possibility of marketing the property. Suddenly, in the beginning of October, the Sisters gave the order that the school must vacate by July 1, 2015, affording the school an unreasonable timeframe in which to attempt to execute an orderly transition strategy.
With less than a year to work with, the Good Counsel family has been thrown into a tailspin. Students who should be studying and enjoying their high school years now worry about where they will be next year, and if they will be able to graduate with their friends from the school they all chose to be at. Sisters who still live in the convent on the property are being forced to find new homes. The Board of Trustees has had to research some heartbreaking options should the unthinkable occur.
The Leadership of the RDC has thus far allowed no negotiation on timing, will not allow the school to purchase any part of the property, and has been generally non-responsive to any communication.
Students, parents, alumnae and friends have rallied a grass-roots effort to #saveGCA. We have questions that need to be answered, concerns that must be heard, and ideas that just might help. We are asking the RDC Leadership team to hear us, talk to us openly, and allow us time to work together to save Good Counsel and its historic campus.
