Save Galathea Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and Great Nicobar Island

The Issue

Great Nicobar island and Galathea Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, is a paradise for bio-diversity in the Great Nicobar island. It hosts multitude of flora and fauna that can be seen no where else in the world. It is one of the last nesting location of the Vulnerable Giant Leatherback Sea Turtle. The island also hosts the Shompen tribe that has called these forests their home for centuries.

However, NITI aayogs new plan to implement development will result in rampant destruction of these life sustaining forests. This move will not only degrade the biodiversity and ecology, but it also will create problems for the Shompen tribe that thrive off of the forests. This violates the official Shompen policy of 2015, they have also gone on record to reject NITI aayogs plans. Moreover, Galathea Bay has been listed as 'Important Marine Turtle Habitats' (February 1, 2015) and has been included in Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ-1), the zone with maximum protection.

The development project will include an airport, tourism center and a port. For these purposes, the Eco Sensitive Zone (ESZ) of Galathea National Park has been made almost negligible. This project will result in the destruction of uncountable flora and will suffocate the fauna as their homes have been taken away from them.

I strongly believe that in order to move forward, we must focus on solving the Climate Change Crisis rather than adding to it. Destruction of these endemic forest will disrupt an enigmatic ecological balance that we have yet to discover. Hundreds of species of Flora and Fauna might be lost because of this. It is our duty to help save these enigmatic forests.
