The Issue

Growing up and living in Gadsden, the DIY skate slab has been more than just concrete and ramps; it's been a lifesaver, a community cornerstone, and a place that transformed lives, including mine. For over a decade, the community of Gadsden has poured their hearts, minds, and resources into building this skatepark. It's not just a place to skate. It's where I've found camaraderie and purpose on my journey to sobriety.

Many of us have put in free labor and pooled our resources, recently spending $500 on a new ramp – all in the name of nurturing a safe and creative environment for everyone, especially the youth. This space keeps our kids out of trouble and encourages a positive outlet for energy and creativity. It’s a shining example of what community spirit can achieve, and now, all of this is at risk.

The owner of the property, having recently taken notice of our skatepark, is planning to demolish the slab this coming Thursday due to insurance issues. Despite garnering three out of four council votes required to save it, we are now facing the very real threat of losing our beloved skatepark.

We urge the City of Gadsden to recognize the skate slab for what it is – a vital community project that deserves protection and support. We propose that instead of demolition, the city could perhaps assist with insurance solutions or contribute to finding a sustainable way to keep the skatepark operational.

This petition is a call to action to the City Council and to our neighbors, to stand united in saving Gadsden’s skate slab. Preserving this space not only benefits those who skate but continues to enrich the community as a whole, fostering connections, creativity, and growth for our youth and families.

Sign this petition to stop the demolition of the Gadsden skate slab and help advocate for community-driven solutions that honor the hard work and dedication poured into this project over the past 10 years.
