Save Fred Johnson Park Public Tennis Courts from Privatization!

Save Fred Johnson Park Public Tennis Courts from Privatization!
The Issue
As concerned members of the Harlem community, we are deeply troubled by the privatization proposal put forth by Katrina Adams and the Harlem Junior Tennis Program. This proposal, which has been submitted to Community Board 10(CB10) for approval without proper community participation and consent, threatens to take away our access to the entire facility by limiting court availability in favor of junior tennis programs.
Fred Johnson Park Tennis Courts (a.k.a The Jungle) hold immense historical significance for Harlem. For decades, these courts have been a cherished space where countless individuals have honed their skills and fostered a love for tennis. Notably, legendary players such as Althea Gibson, Fred Johnson have graced these very courts with their talent.
We believe that any decision regarding the future of this beloved facility should be made with input from all stakeholders involved – including local residents who have relied on these courts for generations. It is crucial that our voices are heard before any irreversible changes are made.
The proposed plan includes remaking 7 out of 8 existing courts along with constructing a building. The proposal also includes a bubble enclosing 4 courts during winter season. While we understand the importance of supporting junior tennis programs in our community, it should not come at the expense of excluding or limiting access for all other players who also rely on these facilities.
We urge CB10 to carefully consider the impact this privatization proposal will have on our community's access to public recreational spaces. We believe it is essential that these courts be maintained so that all players – young and old may enjoy playing tennis at Fred Johnson Park.
By signing this petition,
1. We call upon CB10 representatives to turn down this proposal and save The Jungle.
2. We strongly request representation in any decision-making process regarding the courts and their refurbishing and upkeep.
Together, let us ensure that future generations of Harlemites can continue to benefit from the rich history and accessibility of Fred Johnson Park Tennis Courts. Sign this petition today to protect our community's right to enjoy these courts for years to come!
