Save Fitzroy Beer Garden from turning into a bin alley
The issue
For more than 50 years, the space at 243–245 Gertrude Street has been an important part of Fitzroy's community life. What was once a roadway has long operated as the Fitzroy Beer Garden — a well-loved gathering place that brings together local residents, workers, visitors, and community groups.
We are concerned by the council's proposal to reopen this space as a roadway and bin access lane, particularly given the lack of meaningful consultation with the people who use and value it. A decision that would permanently change a long-established community space should not be made without genuine engagement with local stakeholders.
The Fitzroy Beer Garden is more than part of a venue. It is a safe, welcoming place that fosters connection, community, and local culture. At a time when community spaces are disappearing, preserving places that bring people together should be a priority.
We call on the council to explore alternative solutions that preserve this important community asset, and can work for all neighbouring businesses that won't result in the closure of a business and loss of multiple jobs.
Sign this petition to protect the Fitzroy Beer Garden and ensure the community has a voice in decisions that affect its shared spaces.
