The Issue

Living in this area, I have seen firsthand the devastating impact that the High Speed 2 (HS2) project has had on our beloved Euston trees. These trees have been a part of our community for generations, providing not just shade and beauty, but a sense of continuity and peace in an otherwise bustling urban environment. Yet, despite their value, we have watched as too many of these magnificent trees have already been sacrificed in the name of this development.

Euston Square Gardens is more than just a green space; it is a vital part of our heritage and our ecosystem. The trees at Euston Square Gardens West must be preserved, not only for current residents but for future generations who deserve to inherit a community that values its natural environment. Each tree that stands is crucial in the fight against air pollution, which in London is amongst the worst in Europe, according to a 2019 report by the European Environment Agency. Trees play an essential role in reducing localised temperatures and supporting urban biodiversity, contributing to our health and wellbeing in immeasurable ways.

While progress and development are important, they should not come at the expense of our environment. Alternative methods of mitigation and construction can be explored to ensure that development is sustainable and sensitive to the natural landscapes that it affects. By employing advanced construction technology, HS2 can minimise its environmental footprint whilst still achieving its transportation goals.

I call upon HS2 Ltd., the local government, and environmental organisations to work collaboratively on creating a plan that prioritises the conservation of our natural spaces. We need to use a more transparent decision-making process that involves community input and expert environmental assessments before further actions are taken.

Protecting these trees isn't just about keeping our community green; it's about showing that we care for our planet and wish to cultivate a future where economic advancement and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. By preserving Euston Square Gardens' trees, we send a powerful message that some things are too valuable to lose.

Please join me in urging the responsible entities to safeguard Euston Square Gardens West and adopt sustainable development practices. Sign this petition to make our voices heard and our environment protected. Together, we can ensure that Euston remains a vibrant, green, and living community for all.
