Save Ethics and Values at UVU

The Issue

Ethics and Values (PHIL 2050) has been a general education requirement at Utah Valley University for years. But now, it's at risk. We are calling on UVU students to sign this petition, telling UVU that Ethics and Values is a valuable course and should be retained as a general education requirement.

(If you are signing, please be sure to include your UVID next to your name)

...

Background: right now, Utah Valley University (UVU) is reevaluating its general education requirements with the apparent intention of reducing the number of general education credits that students are required to take. As a result, Ethics and Values (along with a few other gen. eds.) are at risk of being removed from the list of required classes.

UVU’s administration will make a decision very soon, so it's important that we make our voices heard now.

We believe that the removal of Ethics and Values as a gen ed. requirement would be a harmful decision for a variety of reasons:

  1. Ethics and Values enables students to develop skills in critical thinking, formulating judgments, considering counter-arguments, and understanding nuance. In a nation that is becoming increasingly polarized, such skills are needed now more than ever.
  2. Ethics and Values exposes students to various worldviews that they may not otherwise be aware of.
  3. Ethics and Values helps students find their voice. Learning how to formulate and express opinions about the world that are cohesive and robust helps students thrive both during and after their undergraduate experience.
  4. We love our adjunct instructors. With lower enrollment in Ethics and Values, we worry that the College of Humanities and Social Sciences may need to lay off adjunct instructors.
