The Issue

As a wildlife conservationist and waterman who has spent most of my life on the ocean, I have had the privilege to witness the miraculous recovery of the Brown Pelican, the Humpback Whale in Hawai'i, and the Gray Whale populations in my home waters of California. These majestic creatures, once on the brink of extinction, have rebounded, thanks in large part to the protections afforded by the Endangered Species Act (ESA). However, the introduction of ESA Amendments Act of 2025 poses a grave threat to this landmark legislation and the species it safeguards.

Today, Secretary Of the INterior Doug Burgum has directed the USFWS and National Marine Fisheries Service to dismantle the law that has been 99% effective at protecting endangered species in the USA. It places beloved and vulnerable species such as sea otters, hammerhead sharks, and manatees at risk of slipping into extinction. With only around 3,000 southern sea otters remaining, any weakening of the ESA could be catastrophic for their survival. This law is a testament to our national commitment to conservation and has protected over 300 species over five decades.

The 30 day public comment period ended December 22 and we have submitted thousands of comments.  Today,  Im urging you to sign this petition, share it, send it to a friend- and visit Sharkstewards.org to email, send a postcard or call Burgum and tell them to leave the ESA alone as written. Once the Comments have been reviewed USFWS and NMFS will send out a notice and that is when we take action!

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) has saved 99% approximately 291 species listed. The act has helped recover 46 species and currently protects over 1,600 domestic species. Changing language including removing the "Blanket Rule" protecting listed species and protecting critical habitat will have a devastating effect on species on the edge like the Southern Sea Otter and the Soupfin Shark.

We also urge Congressman Westerman, the House Committee on Natural Resources, and all members of Congress to reject HR 1897 and preserve the ESA in its current form. The survival of countless species and the ecological health of our oceans and landscapes depend on it.

The ESA not only protects wildlife but also aligns with American values of stewardship and responsibility. Altering it now would dismantle decades of progress and put American interests and biodiversity at risk.

Please join our Endangered Species Coalition in defending the Endangered Species Act. Sign this petition to tell Congress and the Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and US Fish and Wildlife Service  to leave the ESA untouched. Our collective voice can ensure that future generations continue to experience the wonder of diverse and thriving wildlife ecosystems. Protect what truly matters from industry and private interests- the wildlife and wilderness we love.
