Save Eagle Ave Green Space

The Issue

The City of Brantford is seriously considering selling and developing the green space on and behind Eagle Ave in Brantford. Our neighbourhood would like to see this space remain a useable part of the neighbourhood and are asking Brantford residents to sign our petition before we have City Councilors present the request to City Council.

Here is an except from the letter we presented to City Councilors Samwell and Van Tilborg:

We are residents of Eagle Place in Brantford, and we are writing to propose the transformation of the wooded area in our neighborhood into a park in lieu of its current designation for the Veterans Memorial Parkway development. As our community continues to grow rapidly, we believe it is essential to preserve this green space and create a welcoming environment for our expanding population of families, children, and pets.

The wooded area in question is already a popular spot for residents to spend time with their kids, walk their dogs, and engage in various family activities. Additionally, the area features a trail that provides access to local amenities and is frequently used by the residents of Eagle Place. Converting this area into a park would not only formalize its current use but also bring additional benefits to our community, such as:

1. Supporting environmental conservation: By preserving this green space, we are protecting the local ecosystem and providing habitat for various species, which is essential for maintaining a healthy environment.

2. Enhancing neighborhood value: A well-maintained park can contribute to the overall attractiveness of the neighborhood and increase property values, benefiting homeowners and local businesses alike.

3. Discouraging homeless encampments: By transforming the wooded area into a well-maintained park, we can discourage homeless individuals from establishing encampments and leaving trash behind. This, in turn, would help maintain the cleanliness and safety of the area for all residents.

4. Ensuring regular maintenance: Establishing the area as a park would ensure that the city takes responsibility for its upkeep, thereby guaranteeing a clean and safe space for residents to enjoy year-round.

5. Promoting health and wellness: Parks and green spaces have been proven to have a positive impact on both physical and mental health. By providing a dedicated area for outdoor activities, we can encourage an active and healthy lifestyle within our community.

6. Preserving access to local amenities: By converting the wooded area into a park, we ensure that the trail connecting residents to local amenities remains available and well-maintained for the benefit of the entire community.

Given the current use of the wooded area and the numerous benefits that a park would bring to Eagle Place, we kindly request that the City Council reconsiders the development plans for the Veterans Memorial Parkway and instead, explore the possibility of creating a park in its place. We are more than happy to participate in any discussions or meetings to further discuss the matter and collaborate on potential solutions.

Thank you for your time and consideration of this important issue. We look forward to working together to make Eagle Place a more vibrant, healthy, and thriving community for all residents.
