We are delighted to report that at last night's meeting of the city"s major applications committee, Westbrook"s plans for redevelopment of Dolphin Square were thrown out.
The five members of the committee unanimously voted against the plans and supported all of the arguments of the objectors against this scheme which has been in planning for nearly three years.
In a packed room at Victoria Street's City Hall, objectors applauded loudly for the two ward councillors, Jim Glen and James Spencer, who outlined the reasons for rejecting the plans. Cllr Angela Harvey, who supported the plans, was greeted with silence and cries of "Shame" after she spoke.
Three local residents, David Weeks, Tony Hambro and Clive Aslet, also spoke out against the plans and received loud applause from the audience who totalled 162, filling the main room and over-flowing into an annexe.
Now the Greater London Authority has 14 days in which to consider the decision and decide whether the London Mayor accepts it or calls it in for his own decision.
After that, Westbrook can appeal but the planning inspectorate has a long history of supporting local authorities protecting Conservation areas.
We will not claim victory and close the petition until we are finally satisfied that the battle has been won.
And we warmly thank all of you who have supported this petition and our campaign and will continue to keep you informed.
