Save Dobbin Hill Verge, Sheffield S11 7JG

The Issue

Stop the sale of this public verge to a private developer.

  1. Selling this verge to make a private garden bigger has no public benefit.
  2. This long, wide, flat, green strip is a quietly important community asset (≈23.8m long). It helps young and old going to nearby schools, shops, community centre and church.
  3. The serious concerns of residents, local councillors and constituted group MECK have all been ignored.
  4. The pavement is narrow (1.1-1.3m wide) so the much wider verge (min 3.1 wide) is used to avoid parked cars and the dangers of walking in the road.
  5. The bottleneck by the house will be extended. Blocking in the pavement with a high wall and metal fence will be dangerous and annoying.
  6. It is already a busy, challenging road junction with difficult visibility.
  7. The developer's planning visuals are very misleading. His house is in the background, he doesn't own the grassed area behind the wall.
  8. Council procedures have been badly done with wrong information, poor scrutiny and missing notices.
  9. We must protect our precious public green assets.
  10. It sets a terrible precedent.

The locals were taken by surprise. Flowers they planted were destroyed.  For some it's a reminder of 2014-18, when thousands of healthy street trees were lost and 2015, when Amey scraped out many beautiful grass verges, back-filling with ugly motorway planings. After traumatic campaigns the felling stopped and verges were restored.

If the verge is saved residents want to upgrade it with wildlife and ecology in mind.
