Save Discord: No Ads, No Greed!

The Issue

Six years ago, I joined Discord and became one of the millions who made it their home — a virtual communication platform for gaming, chatting, and community. Discord was a platform for voice and text—not for monetization and advertising. It was a culture of community collaboration and communication.

Now that culture is at risk.

Founding CEO Jason Citron left. Humam Sahnini, the new CEO, hails from Activision Blizzard and King—companies known for exploitative monetization practices. With rumors of an IPO in the near future, discussions about “monetizing users” and “additional revenue opportunities” are already circulating — paywalls for servers and voice channels are on the table.

If this comes to fruition, expect:
• Core features behind new paywalls
• Increased Nitro prices
• Microtransactions for special emojis, themes, and profile options
• Limitations on bots, moderation, and API access
• More tracking of user data and selling of user data to third parties
• More business-first initiatives at the cost of community quality of life

What We're Asking For:

We're not against Discord making money as a business or growing—they can grow without exploiting their users and sacrificing quality of life.

We demand that Discord's new and existing leadership:
• Keep all core features free for all—no paywalls for basic needs.
• Keep a NO policy regarding ads within servers, chats, and calls.
• Allow increases in revenue without increased violations to user privacy.
• Keep bots and API access open to anyone who wants to use it.
• Appoint a CEO who understands and respects Discord as a community.

We built Discord.
We funded Discord.
We made Discord great.

Now it's time to protect it.

Please sign and share this petition if you care about the future of Discord.
Together, we can keep Discord great!
