The Issue

Sanjay Van located in the heart of South Delhi is a vital green lung of the city. It helps maintain environmental balance and sustains the human settlements nearby in Vasant Kunj, Mehrauli, Kishangarh, Katwaria Sarai, Lado Sarai, Ber Sarai, Qutub Institutional Area and the nearby academic communities of Jawaharlal Nehru University and the IIT Delhi. That apart, it is also a natural paradise hosting a wide variety of wildlife who flock in its water bodies and hillocks. In the months from November to February every year when New Delhi becomes unlivable because of smoke and dust, Sanjay Van provides a rare safe zone where we can  breath easy.  However despite its steller role in our lives, earlier this monsoon, the Delhi Development Authority and Delhi Government officials have started a programme ostensibly to remove "Junglee keekar" or "Vilaiti keekar" in Sanjay Van. In this they have secured support of the judiciary. The problem however is that  removing a tree in a forest will require removing many trees nearby as no tree exists in isolation and therefore in the process of removing 'keekar' they are removing many other trees, bushes, shrubs that form vital part of the forest. This task is being achieved with the help of gigatic land removers, excavators and bulldozers as they are using brute industrial level machinery to "kill" these trees. The result of this heartless process is leading to nothing but deforestation. Today vast stretches of Sanjay Van have become barren earth. On paper officials are saying that they are also planting other trees but in fact they are just cleaning up forest and freeing land from nature's control. The end goal of this process appears like creation of some kind of an eco tourism project that will replace this ancient forest that has been part of our communities in South Delhi for centuries. Sanjay Van needs your help to survive. We as Indian citizens cannot allow this sort of day light deforestation that Delhi already dealing with unlivable AQI, is in no position to afford. Please circulate this petition to raise awareness and please raise your voice to stop this brazen deforestation taking place in our capital city. Let us all join hands to #SaveSanjayVan #SaveDelhi and #SaveOurEnvironment.
