Save 'Currumbaan' Yuin birthing site from desecration!

The issue

Wangeen Booraja ‘Women of Tomorrow’ has been established as an entity to support Indigenous Women in the fight for Social Justice, Human Rights and Land Rights.

Wulbunja Women are fighting for the protection of an Ancient Birthing Site located on their traditional lands of the NSW South Coast. The land was wrongfully sold without consultation with, or the consent of, Traditional Owners and knowledge holders of this place.

Traditional owners have an unbreakable living connection to this place of sacred Womens business.

This birthing site is under immediate threat of development by the Australian Shaolin Association.

This place has been a Birthing Site, a Sacred Womens Place, a Womens University and a Place of Reverence since time memorial.

Many non-Indigenous women also attended this site at the turn of the century to receive expert support and guidance from our Indigenous midwives.

Burial sites of mothers and their babies who did not survive childbirth all remain at this place. Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike.

Indigenous Midwives who assisted in all births here during the turn of the century were returned here as their final resting place. They rest within the boundaries of the currently approved development plans.

The Australian Shaolin association is a foreign male run religious group. They intend to build a tourist resort, a golf course and temple on top of burials at our sacred Yuin birthing site.

Significant offence and spiritual damage has occurred with the suggestion that a male dominated foreign religion will occupy what is our sacred women’s site. Not just sacred to South Coast Salt Water Women, but to all Women.

We ask that immediate and urgent ministerial intervention is taken to protect this site from any further harm.

We call on the Indigenous Affairs Minister, the Environmental Minister, the Health Minister and the Prime Minister to intervene urgently for the sake of Indigenous Women, their health, their wellbeing and their birthing rights.

A formal investigation should be conducted into the process of this sale, and any/all Shoalhaven city council members and/or Land Council members involved.

We ask that this sacred place is returned to Wulbunja Indigenous Women, so that it may continue to be a home for Birthing on Country and a University of Womens Business; as it always has been.
